The Acquaintance Test is always the first test given during any and all Polygraph examinations. It allows the person being tested to become familiar with the equipment and procedures. Secondly, it allows the examiner to make small adjustments in the software and instruments to compensate for the minor differences in the physiological ‘Homeostasis’ (Normal State) of everyone’s body.
The Acquaintance test consists of nine general questions which have little to do with the reason that the person is taking the Polygraph exam. It is also the only test which consists of only one chart.
The Acquaintance test will be followed by one or two additional Polygraph exams which are specifically designed to deal with the subject or issue tested. Each test will consist of three charts.
All charts for each test will contain the same questions but will be in differing sequences. Each test will be composed of different questions. The questions may be similar in nature or deal with the same or closely related subject matter but will be worded differently.
As with ALL Polygraph exams, the questions are gone over with and reviewed with the examinee before their being asked the question on the Polygraph exam. There is NEVER an un-reviewed or surprise question. The examiner will make sure that the individual being examined has a full understanding of the questions on the test before they are asked during the examination process.
Many, if not all people tested on the Polygraph are concerned about how their being 'nervous' will affect the outcome of the exam. Contrary to popular opinion, a person’s nervousness has no effect on the signals being monitored and recorded by the Polygraph. Being nervous is something shared by nearly every person who has ever, or will ever take a Polygraph exam. You are not alone!
In answering the questions presented to you during the exam, just remember that the Polygraph does not know the difference between a little lie, a big lie, a lie of omission or if you’re just taking a guess at something. It just knows there is a problem with the answer.
